3 Steps to Finding Your Purpose
By Shari Steinbach, MS RDN, RDBA Contributing Editor
Do you know what your life purpose is? Finding your purpose gives meaning to your existence and helps you to align your actions so they impact the world in a way that fulfills you. Discovering what your purpose is may sound like a complicated endeavor, but these 3 steps can get you off to a successful start:
#1 – Determine what drives you. Make a list of all the things you have done that bring you meaning and joy. Think about how those actions that left you fulfilled were tied to being of service – to others, to family, to your community, to an organization, or to the world. You many discover a pattern that points you in a clear direction. For example, you may find joy by helping organizations manage and lead people more positively, or that you want to be a catalyst for bringing positive change in other’s lives, or that you want to use your voice to communicate messages that need to be shared.
#2 – Honor the things you love to do and move away from what drains you. It’s hard to honor your life purpose if you are constantly doing things that discourage and exhaust you. Many of us can relate to the feeling of being with friends that uplift and encourage us versus those that provide nothing but negativity that zaps our energy. You can also experience this if you’ve ever left a toxic workplace only to feel like a weight was lifted from your shoulders as you moved forward to design a career you love. This positive momentum can only happen when you make choices to honor your own needs and values.
#3 – Use your superpowers to take action. Living out your life purpose is truly about how you live, how you engage with others, and how you use your special talents to support growth and positivity in the world to add value. When you are using your personal gifts effectively you will feel like you are in the zone. Being grateful, optimistic and empowered will help you continue to take actions that are aligned with your life purpose, and you will naturally attract experiences and people that provide support as you continue on your journey. Stay alert to the new opportunities that come to you and only act on those that truly resonate.
